20 of the Best Travel Quotes to Inspire You

I’m a big quote fan. I used to doodle quote illustrations in notebooks in middle school, and I love collecting these little blurbs of inspiration whenever I find them. The new year is still young, so I thought I’d share some of the best travel quotes I’ve kept track of over the years to help inspire you to explore, wander, discover. You know, the usual synonyms. Some you might recognize, and some you might not. Either way, I hope they help you make the most of 2016 and get you to travel (as is the point of this site) whether it’s to a new country or just out of your own comfort zone. Also, because it’s me, I added my own commentary. Enjoy!

“Not all who wander are aimless. Especially not those who seek truth beyond tradition, beyond definition, beyond the image.” – Mona Lisa Smile | One of my favorite movies, and by far my favorite quote to live by. This site was almost called “Truth Beyond Definition.”

“Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all of one’s lifetime.” – Mark Twain | You are changing to world by traveling because you’re forcing yourself to learn about new points of views. And education is what’s going to fight ignorance and evil.

“Wear good shoes, and those shoes will take you to good places.” -Yoko Kamio, Hana Yori DangoRough translation from one of my favorite mangas of all time. It also feeds into my general appreciation for a good pair of shoes.

“You’re off the Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting. So…get on your way!” – Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You’ll GoClassic.

travel-quotes

“One can only really travel if one lets oneself go and takes what every place brings without trying to turn it into a healthy private pattern of one’s own…” – Freya Stark | This lady is on my list of woman to read about, and she will definitely be making an appearance later on under HiSTORY.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”– Mark Twain | I know, two from MT. But he’s seriously got some quotable gems. Plus nothing to get you motivated than the thought of being disappointed and apathetic as you plus twenty years.

“They should tell you when you’re born: have a suitcase heart, be ready to travel.” – Gabrielle Zevin | Cover of a notebook I found in San Francisco. If I had seen this quote before I created this site, I guarantee you “Suitcase Heart” would have been a contender.

“Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” – Alan Keightley | Something I’ve had to come to terms with and get family and friends around me to come to terms with over the last few years. No, I’m not settling down anytime soon, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I was born lost and take no pleasure in being found.” – John Steinbeck | Pretty much. I’m only 23, I’ll find myself later.

“If you wish to travel far and fast, travel light. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiveness, selfishness, and fears.” – Cesare Pavese | A good one for letting go of the past as well.

best-travel-quotes

“Reach for the stars and if you don’t grab ’em, at least you’re on top of the world.” -Pitbull, “Give Me Everything” | While this song is more about getting a girl to sleep with him, I thought this lyric, isolated, was an excellent gem. And I love Pitbull.

“One day, you’ll wake-up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now.” – Paulo Coehlo | Similar to MT’s twenty years quote. Be afraid of regrets and let that fear motivate you to explore and experience.

“I’ve got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom.” – Thomas Carlyle | I used to live by this quote in high school, and while I applied it to studying, swimming, and extracurricular activities (not smart, by the way), I now apply it to travel and living my life in general. I hate being bored, and I love that exhilarated feeling you get when you feel inspired.

“My mother used to say something that drove me nuts. There is a sunrise and a sunset every day, and you can choose to be there for it. You can put yourself in the way of beauty.” – WildI’m not sure because admittedly I haven’t read the book yet, but I believe this might only be in the movie? (Correct me if I’m wrong). Either way it’s such an obvious realization. Sometimes you have to remember that being happy, finding beauty, and even exploring can be small and simple. It doesn’t always have to grand.

“But I think some people wait forever, and only at the end of their lives do they realize that their life has happened while they were waiting for it to start.” – Jess Walter, Beautiful Ruins Listening to this book on Audible right now and loving it. You can tell I’m taking all these warnings about not regretting my life choices later in life seriously.

“Peel off these dusty wool blankets of apathy and antipathy and cynical desiccation. I want life in all its stupid sticky rawness.” -Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies Another of my favorite books! Travel inspires and excites. For me it’s my vaccination against things like apathy and cynicism, things that are too easy to succumb to with our generation.

best-travel-quotes“When I was young, I used to have this thing where I wanted to see everything. I used to think, ‘How can I die without seeing every inch of this world?'” – Leonardo DiCaprio | I mean, we’re soulmates for a reason *cough*.

“Where you go, go with all your heart.” – Confucius | You can’t half-ass travel. I mean, you could, but what a waste that would be.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” -Helen Keller | A little cliched, but still one of my standby favorites. Because if you’re not trying to live an adventurous (for you) life, what the hell are you doing?

“Certainly travel is more than the seeing of sights. It is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – Miriam Beard | I wouldn’t be who I am today without travel, and I have to say for all my faults and room for growth, I am  pretty happy that I’m me.

  • This is my favorite travel quote, it sums up traveling perfectly: “And I’ve always felt that the beauty of being surrounded by the foreign is that it slaps you awake. You can’t take anything for granted. Travel, for me, is a little bit like being in love, because suddenly all your senses are at the setting marked ‘on.’ Suddenly you’re alert to the secret patterns of the world. The real voyage of discovery, as Marcel Proust famously said, consists not in seeing new sights, but in looking with new eyes. And of course, once you have new eyes, even the old sights, even your home become something different.” – Pico Iyer
